Antelope Canyon is such an intense place and it’s easy to get lost in the spiritual atmosphere of this underground labyrinth. Slot canyons are carved out of solid sandstone by years of relentless rushing waters and dislodged rocks. Huge sculptured walls shadow your every step, and the stillness and silence is enveloping. Outside the desert sun beats down on the heart of America but in this cool underground environment it’s literally another world. At certain times of the day when the sun is directly overhead, shafts of light stream through the cracks and bounce off the sculptured walls. The effect is incredible - the golden sunlight reflecting onto the ochre sandstone walls creates a magnificent tangerine glow. I spent hours shooting down here, and everywhere I turned a new composition presented itself. This image with its centerpiece sandstone vortex evokes an aura of mystery and perfectly describes the eerie surrounds of the canyonlands.
