I had spent a few weeks shooting peaks, valleys and epic fall vistas when I noticed a brilliant kaleidoscope of forest floor. I threw my bag over my shoulder and hiked in. I found myself standing on a prism-like carpet of leaves, grass and plants. I set up and shot this two-foot square for an entire hour. I was absorbed with this patch of simple beauty and the idea that even underfoot, nature offers so many wonderful surprises of color and texture.
