The Big Island, Hawaii
During the past five years, I’ve made countless trips to the Big Island of Hawaii. Each visit, I was hoping Mother Nature would smile upon me with a wicked show of volcanic fury. Visit after visit, I was left with disappointment. I knew my persistence would pay off one day. At 1 o’clock in the morning, led only by the light of moon, I was driven to the edge. Fueled to the source by pure adrenaline, all of my senses pushed me forward. I knew I had to get this shot. I arrived at the edge just before daybreak. There was a five minute window of opportunity to capture my vision. The danger that surrounded me seemed to fall outside of my view, as the eruption in front of me grabbed all of my attention. I set up my camera and took a series of shots over the course five minutes, which seemed to pass in five seconds. Daybreak lightened the scene and the moment was over. Mother Nature had smiled upon me. I had captured the image I had dreamed of.
