Olympic National Park, Washington
The Olympic Peninsula has a certain magic about it, and I wanted to capture that. In early August I prayed for a temperature inversion to cloak the magical Hoh Rainforest with mist. I discovered this location a week earlier and felt this morning was right. I couldn’t afford to miss it, so I set the alarm for 5A and drove in from the tiny town of Forks. As I hiked into the forest, daybreak was just beginning, and the low fog layer gave this location a truly mystical feeling. As I carefully framed up this image–giving it depth into the forest–looking through the viewfinder gave me goose bumps. It was like looking back through time, almost to the Jurassic Period. The lighting was pure magic, and I felt privileged just to press the shutter and capture such a special moment. At one with such strength and power from Mother Nature is a feeling that will remain with me forever.
