Matanuska Glacier, Alaska
Many people think of Alaska as a barren wasteland in the winter months but nothing could be further from the truth. This glacier was like a piece of art laid out on the ice before me. Every crease and crevice added to its character and seemed to tell a story of its slow-moving life. The shades of blue in the foreground contrast with the darkness of a pretty menacing sky. Somehow this shot really captures Alaska: A combination of harshness and beauty.
