Joshua Tree National Park, California
On a previous day’s shoot I had observed this formation of cacti turned toward the horizon as if in anticipation of some impending event. I knew that this surreal landscape against a backdrop of a desert sunrise could deliver me a very special image. Rising well before dawn, I hiked to the location and set up my tripod in total darkness. Facing my camera towards the east I watched, and waited for what Mother Nature would present. From the first faint splinters of the encroaching sun I knew I was in for something magical, and as the strengthening ochre glow washed the desert before me I was transfixed. I shot my images straight down the barrel into the sun, backlighting these pilgrims saluting the sun and creating a halo effect. As the sun finally split the horizon I fired off one last shot–this incredible, otherworldly image.
