Kilauea Volcano, The Big Island, Hawaii
Hawaii, The Big Island in particular, is a geological work in progress. Loihi is the future 9th Hawai’ian island, bubbling under the surface and expected to make its above-water debut sometime in the next few thousand years. Molten lava continues to reshape the island’s contours daily, leaving ground that remains crunchy and malleable. With the rising heat of the volcano, so hot it melted the legs of my tripod, and sulfurous fumes around me, an eerie formation caught my eye like a volcanic vortex. A fiery, violet sunrise brought out the intricate details of the lava, outlining the Earth’s surface at its newest. And hottest.
