Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
This extremely difficult location to get to was no joke - actually one of my most challenging hikes I have even been on. Timing, persistence and a little madness were all the right ingredients. It had been raining cats and dogs non-stop for two weeks and looked like it wouldn’t let up at all. My assistant Mark and I had no option, we had to go for it.
An hour into the hike, we hit a massive mud and rock bank, hundreds of feet high. We had no option, and slid down the almost vertical bank towards the raging river like two frogs. The only way was to slash our own path through the intense forest along the bank of the wild river between the steep cliffs on both sides.
We crossed the wild river once, then back again to reach the spot. Confronted by the falls was a mind blowing experience. I had to shoot the scene from the middle of the flowing river. Standing waist deep in freezing water, totally waterlogged to the bone, the water ripped past the tripod. This was it! Two seconds felt like forever. Looking at this scene through the lens was unreal.
