White Mountains National Forest, New Hampshire
I’m constantly challenged in the forest by trying to isolate a single scene that really speaks to me. I choose a long lens and a small aperture to throw the background out of focus and isolate my subject, at which point I waited for the wind to subside and the scene to make itself visible. After the heavy rains, the tree trunks darkened and the reds popped out against the background–which enhanced the theme of the image while retreating from focus. As a result, the scarlet leaves floating in the forest seemed almost detached from their branches.
