Goblin Valley, Utah
I sometimes think of the ancient artists who did rock paintings as the first photographers, so it’s an honor to preserve their work on film. I love the burnt orange color of the rock in this shot. The afternoon light seemed to set the stone on fire and the story that has been painted so carefully still gets my imagination going. I tried to frame the shot in such a way that the original artist’s work is framed neatly without anything else interfering with its message. It’s still haunting for me to look at this image and think of the artist at work, just like me, but so long ago.
