Yosemite National Park, California
I travelled to Yosemite to shoot the fall colours, which appear for only a couple of weeks of the year. Mother Nature puts on a magnificent display–the foliage turning vivid rusts, reds and yellows seemingly overnight. I shot this image many times over a period of a week, experimenting with different lighting and from various angles, but huge contrast problems prevented me from capturing the shot I really wanted. On my final day in the park, I returned to the river for one last try. Just as I was about to give up and pack up my gear, the sun burst through the clouds directly onto the face of Half Dome and illuminated the scene–I knew instinctively I’d got my perfect shot!
