Big Sur, California
As an artist, I am always drawn to images that capture a sense of place. Something that goes beyond the view of a location — creating an emotional connection to that moment in time.
The Californian coast preserves hundreds of miles of untouched beauty and McWay falls has that magical feel about it. During the daytime this location is stunning — but shooting it at night is even more spectacular. The 80-foot waterfall cascades into the Pacific Ocean, creating a natural wonder where inland fresh water meets the sea.
With camera in place, clouds began to gather just as the sun cast its warm glow over the sandstone cliffs and turquoise cove. After shooting the first set of sunset exposures, there was now time to chill and absorb the moment. It would be hours before the starry night would emerge.
As the last light faded a whole new world opened. Gradually the stars started appearing and slowly filled the night sky full of sparkling jewels. The Milky Way stretched across the sky like a river of light, its radiant glow reminding us of the infinite possibilities that exist beyond our world.
Taking multiple long exposures, utilizing a star tracker, and pushing the camera to its limit was the only way for the human eye to witness this stunning scene. It made it possible to capture the full brilliance of this celestial wonderland that we would otherwise never see.
