Nature has a magical, yet sometimes hidden way of displaying her beauty to us. Death Valley is a place of geological extremes, total isolation and magnificent artistry. It is something you have to see to truly understand – if you can get to it.
The sand dunes spread for miles in the middle of nowhere. I spent days hiking the dunes at sunrise and sunset. Magic hour is the only time to capture the true essence of these rippling dunes – as the shadows are so critical for the mood of this shot. Without these shadows, the shot loses it soul – there is no character. They are like living, breathing elements – constantly moving and changing their shape across the valley floor
Every step I took, the image changed. Finally, on day 3, deep into the dunes I saw my shot – everything lined up perfectly. All I had to do was wait for the magic light and let Mother Nature reveal herself. As the sun dropped, the desert stood still and gorgeous pastel clouds sat upon the horizon. I knew this was the shot – all I had to do was press the shutter.
