On my travels through the USA shooting for the Spirit of America book, I painstakingly strived to capture the perfect photograph to describe each and every state. On the deserted shores of Edisto Island as the Atlantic Ocean lapped its wintery sands, I happened upon this stranded starfish.

Sensing the opportunity for a very special image, I got down low and close and used it as a striking focal point. Just as I was about to shoot, the heavens opened above me and the violet clouds cast an amazing hue over the beach. As soon as I closed the shutter on this one, I just knew it would be a magic shot.
